This is the beginning of a new year.  We usually celebrate by gathering with close friends and family members for a party on December 31st. Everybody has food and drinks, and they wait for the countdown on television. When it is exactly 12:00am, there is a big celebration.  All the people at the party shout, "Happy New Year".  They hug and kiss everybody they see.

Sometimes, people make New Year resolutions.  These are promises that they will do something better for their lives in the coming year. One popular resolution is to go on a diet.  Another resolution is to exercise.  Other people resolve to stop smoking.  Most people believe they will accomplish these resolutions.  They start out well in January, but by March, they are usually back to their bad habits again!
